Cattle Who Have Been Harassed by Wolves

Postby lgdnevada » Mon May 28, 2012 7:40 am

I was having a discussion with one of the guys here from the filming this week from Montana and we talked about how cattle act once they've been targeted by wolf packs. Some of the signs and side effects are:

Increased bunching up
Milling around
Stressed, nervous
Don't put heads down long to eat
Won't utilize pastures, afraid to move around
Weight loss
Aborted calves
Empty heifers; don't breed
Scared of stock dogs, will attack them and push away
Difficult to herd and move from place to place

Anyone else out there have more to add please do.

This also makes it difficult to bring in LGD's to cattle like this as they're already scared to death by wolves and look at dogs as potential threat.

I know a rancher up here who has had these problems, and they do as you say, run through the barbed wire fences, so then he's got fencing repair on top of weight loss, stress. And, has to go gather the cattle after they have busted out.

No wolves *yet* in Bakersfield, but the way they are coddling them up north of here, and trying to get legislation through to allow them to flourish in CA, you can just bet they'll be a major problem in another ten years!
